Femmes au bord de l'eau

Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat

Evoking the bold spirit of early 20th-century Fauvism, this 1995 canvas reimagines the classical theme of bathers with a modern twist. Ilana abandons realistic skin tones, rendering the five female figures in luminous shades of amber, emerald, and violet. Thick, energetic brushstrokes sculpt the forms against a backdrop of churning cobalt waves and a rose-streaked sky, creating a silent dialogue between the women who appear entirely at ease in their nakedness. This work anticipates the group compositions found in her later African homage series, showing an early fascination with the collective feminine spirit. It is a celebration of uninhibited freedom, transforming a traditional seaside scene into a primal paradise where humanity and nature exist in colorful, rhythmic harmony.
