Rèverie in Coral

Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat

This silk painting from 1992 pushes the medium toward abstraction, moving away from the defined subjects of Bird and Flowers toward a haze of pure atmosphere. Ilana allows the dyes to bleed and settle in unpredictable pools, creating a vibrant wash of warm coral, salmon, and twilight violet that feels less like a still life and more like a captured memory. While whimsical floral forms and scattered fruit populate the composition, their structures are malleable, defined only by the distinct gutta lines that struggle to contain the liquid color. The result suggests a state of abundance constantly on the verge of melting away. It is a poetic meditation on impermanence, capturing the specific, hazy light of a daydream where objects lose their solidity and become pure sensation.
