Composition
Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat
In this 1997 work, Ilana pushes her expressionist style toward pure abstraction and psychological depth. A kaleidoscope of raw emotion explodes from the canvas, pulling the viewer into a gathering of fragmented figures. The prominent figure on the left, with a striking violet face and fiery orange body, exudes an intensity that contrasts with the frenetic energy of the blue and green forms on the right. Swirls of white and yellow create constant movement, suggesting a memory dissolving or forming before our eyes. Titled simply Composition, it strips away the specific narratives of her Jerusalem or Deauville works to focus entirely on the emotional resonance between figures, capturing the complexity of identity through the universal language of color.
