Femme à l'abat-jour
Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat
Painted in 1998, this work revisits the motif of the illuminated interior seen in her earlier Abat-jour, but introduces a human presence. Ilana constructs the space using bold planes of color, allowing the atmosphere to take precedence over detail. The central lampshade erupts with kaleidoscopic patterns, casting a prismatic glow on the ghostly profile of a woman on the right. Deep midnight blues dominate the background, suggesting the cool air of evening, while the hot reds of the figure anchor her in warm emotion. The loose brushwork blurs the line between the safety of the interior and the mystery of the night outside, turning a simple evening on a balcony into a profound meditation on presence and the comfort of solitude.
