The devill
Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat
Emerging from a chaotic storm of scratchy textures, a singular red figure strides forward with mischievous purpose. Titled The devill, this 1998 work challenges our perception of malevolence by presenting a figure that feels more playful than terrifying. Ilana constructs this dense universe using thick layers of paint and frantic brushwork. The central character anchors the composition while navigating a whirlwind of abstract symbols—birds, fleeting thoughts—in cobalt and emerald. The rough application gives the piece a kinetic, tactile quality. It invites us to recognize that our personal demons are often familiar parts of our own psyche, integrated into the messy, vibrant tapestry of daily life rather than existing as external monsters.
