Terrasse Deauville

Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat

In 1993, Ilana’s focus shifted from the internal worlds of surrealism to the external beauty of the French coast. This work initiates her exploration of Deauville, a theme she would return to repeatedly. Here, the perspective is intimate and voyeuristic, peering from a balcony through a dense curtain of verdant foliage toward the distinctive timber-framed architecture of Normandy. Unlike the breezy, open beach scenes she would paint later that year, this composition is anchored by the dark, vertical lines of a railing in the foreground, creating a barrier between the domestic interior and the sun-drenched world outside. It captures a specific quietude—a private moment of observation that contrasts with the public spectacle of the boardwalks, preserving the warmth and character of a summer afternoon.
