Régate II
Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat
Continuing the theme from Régate I, this 2001 work intensifies the sensation of the race. A vibrant cacophony of color sweeps across the canvas, employing a saturated palette of emeralds, deep cobalts, and fiery reds to construct a dense field of overlapping triangular forms. These shapes mimic the crowded start line where hulls and sails blur together. Ilana’s loose, expressive brushwork implies whipping wind, while sharp white highlights cut through like sunlight on canvas. The vertical rhythm keeps the eye dancing, suggesting forward momentum. It moves beyond a literal depiction to explore the abstract sensation of speed, celebrating the dynamic beauty of the world in motion.
