La douleur
Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat
This is a map of a psyche torn apart by an overwhelming emotional event. A single, heavy tear divides a fractured world of ice and fire in this intense 2001 work. On the right, deep crimsons frame a realistic eye, where the tear falls onto a textured patch of fiery impasto resembling a raw wound. A slit-pupiled eye watches from below, adding a layer of primal fear. This stands in stark opposition to the left side, where cool blues dissolve into a jagged white void containing a wandering silhouette. Titled La douleur, it visualizes the internal geography of grief, suggesting that profound pain splits our reality between sharp clarity and disorienting haze.
