Hommage Yves, Afrique III

Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat

The final piece in the 2001 memorial triptych anchors the viewer in a dreamscape of memory and light. Amidst vast rolling dunes of saturated yellow and violet, a woman crouches in the foreground, her posture protective as she holds a naked infant. The stylized, graphic brushwork strips away detail to focus entirely on the tender interaction. By placing this image of birth and protection within the context of a tribute to her deceased son, Ilana creates a poignant cycle of life and death. The vastness of the colorful background emphasizes the fragility of the life held in the woman's hands. It is a spiritual sanctuary where the artist uses the unyielding vibrancy of life to combat the darkness of grief.
