Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat

Reflecting the visual clutter of the early 90s, this collage constructs a dense, claustrophobic interior where pop culture intersects with domestic life. Ilana uses magazine clippings to create a dizzying sense of accumulation; the iconic Barbie smiles with artificial perfection on the right, contrasting sharply with a vintage black-and-white gaze peering from behind a silver spoon. An elegant, patterned hand reaches toward a striped shopping bag, bridging the gap between surrealism and consumerism. Created in 1993, this piece captures the overwhelming nature of visual media and the commercialization of female identity. It creates a dialogue with her other collage work, Carré bleu, suggesting a period where the artist sought to organize the chaotic fragments of the modern world into a cohesive, albeit crowded, psychological portrait.
