Deauville I
Ilana Baumgarten-Wajsblat
Stripping away the architecture seen in Terrasse Deauville, this work from 1993 moves to the shoreline, isolating a single object against the vastness of the sea. A multicolored parasol stands defiant, its geometric segments of red, yellow, green, and blue clashing beautifully with the cool, organic tones of the Atlantic. The textured brushwork brings the white-capped waves to life, contrasting the choppy water with the smooth, sweeping haze of the sky. Devoid of people, the open umbrella suggests a lingering human presence, transforming the beach into a stage of quiet anticipation. It is a study in solitude, capturing the essence of the Normandy coast through the interplay of man-made joy and the eternal, indifferent rhythm of the tides.
